hiatus

I am taking a break from this blog. Only two people visit on a regular basis, and while I appreciate their enthusiasm, I'm just not that into it right now. I am bored. Posting has become a chore rather than a pleasure, so I am taking an indefinite hiatus. I don't know when I will do regular posts again. Maybe July, perhaps August. Only time will tell. Thanks, Maggie and Leslie, for indulging my silliness every week for the past 3-and-a-half months. It's been fun. I hope to be posting more in my other blog, if you wish to read the details of my exceedingly boring existence. Farewell for now.

A Witherspoonful of Hotness

This week, I chose two excellent actors, Jake Gyllenhaal and Joaquin Phoenix, both of whom have worked with Hollywood sweetheart Reese Witherspoon.

Jake grew up in an entertainment family; his father Stephen is a director, mother Naomi Foner is a screenwriter/producer, and older sister Maggie is a successful actress. Jake made his film debut at age 11 as Billy Crystal's son in the comedy City Slickers. His next role came in the romantic drama A Dangerous Woman, directed by father Stephen, wriiten for the screen by mother Naomi, and co-starring sister Maggie. He guest-starred on the TV crime drama "Homicide: Life on the Street", but his first big break came in 1999 when he landed role of young Homer Hickam in the dramatic biopic October Sky. His star turn as a wide-eyed, ambitious dreamer living in a small coal-mining town led to his acclaimed performance as the titular character in the cult hit sci-fi thriller Donnie Darko, in which sister Maggie played Donnie's sister. After a string of subtle-yet-powerful performances in a few independent projects, Jake's star hit mega-watt status for his powerhouse performance as gay cowboy Jack Twist alongside the late Heath Ledger in the critically acclaimed hit drama Brokeback Mountain, for which Jake earned a slew of award nods including Oscar and SAG, and National Board of Review and BAFTA wins. Afterwards, Jake portrayed real men in two more biopics: 2005's Gulf War drama Jarhead and 2007's true crime thriller Zodiac. Last October Jake was part of an all-star cast in the political drama Rendition. Though critically and popularly panned, the flick spawned a romance between Jake and co-star Reese, his first since his break-up with actress Kirsten Dunst in 2004.
Jake's upcoming projects include Brothers, a remake of Susanne Bier's war drama , co-starring Natalie Portman and Toby Maguire, due out in December, and the comedy Nailed, written by Kristin Gore, daughter of former Vice President Al Gore, co-starring Jessica Biel and James Marsden, currently filming. He is rumored to be cast in the Jerry Bruckheimer/Disney touted big screen adaption of the popular video game Prince of Persia: Sands of Time, as well as an as-yet-untitled sci-fi, lunar-themed project from Mr. & Mrs. Smith director Doug Liman.

Joaquin Phoenix was also born into a talented family. His late older brother River, older sister Rain, and younger sisters Liberty and Summer all got into the acting business at a young age. As a youngster, Joaquin decided to change his name to Leaf, to match his siblings nature-oriented names. Joaquin made his first appearance (as Leaf) on brother River's sitcom "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers", based on the beloved musical of the same name. He made his big screen debut in the comedy SpaceCamp in 1986. His next big role came playing an angry teenager in the comedy Parenthood. He stayed out of the public eye for a while, until he was thrust back into it following the drug overdose death of brother River. His next two roles, as Nicole Kidman's obsessed fan in the dark comedy To Die For, and as one of two brothers courting three sisters in the romance Inventing the Abbotts, opposite Liv Tyler would earn the young actor, who had gone back to using his birth name, much critical acclaim. After several notable performances, Joaquin's rise to fame culminated with his chilling portrayal of scheming Emperor Commodus in 2000's epic Gladiator, earning him supporting actor Oscar and Golden Globe nominations. Phoenix provided the voice Kenai in the 2003 Disney animated feature Brother Bear. 2005 proved to be the actor's biggest year yet, taking on the mammoth role of "The Man in Black", country and rock icon Johnny Cash, to massive acclaim in the biopic Walk The Line, earning him a Golden Globe win for best actor and Oscar and SAG nominations. Co-star Witherspoon took home the best actress Oscar for her portrayal of Cash's long-time love June Carter. He also shared a Grammy win for the movie's soundtrack. Joaquin can be seen next in the romantic drama Two Lovers, co-starring Gwyneth Paltrow. So, who's hotter?

What?! Joaquin? Really? Wow....was not expecting that. Anyway, I think Jake is hotter. I've been crushing on him ever since I saw him in 'October Sky'. Thanks for voting. I am taking a break this week. A new post will be up late next Monday, May 26.

Emolicious

This week, I thought I'd try something a little different than the standard hollywood fare. I think actor/singer Jared Leto is one fine-looking guy, minus the red streaks in his emo/punk-styled tresses...gross. Anyway, I was thinking about whom I could compare him to, and I came up with My Chemical Romance frontman Gerard Way. These guys lend their voices to very distinctive sounds of rock music-whether it's emo, punk, garage, indie, alternative or a combination, no one can quite say for certain.

Jared Leto got his start in television, gaining notoreity as illiterate heartthrob Jordan Catalano on the short lived ABC teen drama "My So-Called Life", opposite Claire Danes. He went on to star in such films as Girl, Interrupted, the cult hit addiction drama Requiem For a Dream, and more recently, the historical drama Alexander, opposite Colin Farrell, and the action flick Lord of War, co-starring Nicholas Cage. Jared stars as John Lennon's assassin Mark David Chapman in the drama Chapter 27, currently in limited release. He has completed filming on the sci-fi romance Mr. Nobody, co-starring Sienna Miller beau Rhys Ifans, Diane Kruger and Sarah Polley.
Jared and younger brother Shannon formed the band Thirty Seconds to Mars in 1998 along with friends. Their first studio album, "30 Seconds to Mars" sold a modest 100,000 copies since its 2002 release. Their second album, 2005's "A Beautiful Lie", with hits like "The Kill", "A Beautiful Lie" and "From Yesterday", went platinum with sales of over one million units. The band tours frequently in between Jared's filming schedule. They are currently on tour in Europe, with dates in Germany, Scotland, and England within the next week.

Gerard Way and his friend Matt Pelissier formed My Chemical Romance, also known as MCR, in the weeks following the September 11, 2001 attacks. They were later joined by Gerard's younger brother Mikey, Frank Iero, and Ray Toro. The band's first album, "I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love", was released on Eyeball Records in 2002. In 2003, the band signed a deal with Reprise Records. Their second studio album "Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge" went platinum within a year of release with hits like "I'm Not Okay (I Promise)" and "Helena". Drummer Pelissier was replaced, amid much controversy, by Bob Bryar in 2004. Their third album, 2006's " Black Parade" went platinum and spawned the hits "Welcome to the Black Parade", "I Don't Love You" and "Teenagers." Two of MCR's songs were featured in the 2005 horror film House of Wax. MCR has three upcoming shows scheduled for this week: two nights in Phillidelphia and one gig at Madison Square Garden in New York.
An avid comic book fan and artist, Gerard writes the 'Umbrella Academy' comic series, published by Dark Horse Comics. So, which rocker is hotter?

Heating Up the Box Office

It's that time of year again-birds singing, plants growing, animals frolicking, sun shining, and of course, the first summer blockbusters entering the multiplexes. This week focuses on two fine young actors-Shia LaBeouf, who stars in the long-awaited Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, and Emile Hirsch, star of the much-buzzed-about Speed Racer.

Young Shia rose to fame as the trouble-making Louis Stevens on the Disney Channel series "Even Stevens", for which he earned a Daytime Emmy Award. He starred in three of last summer's hit movies: Disturbia, the surprise hit thriller, the blockbuster action film Transformers, and the animated family comedy Surf's Up. Shia has one film in the can, Eagle Eye, a thriller co-starring Michelle Monaghan, Rosario Dawson, and Billy Bob Thornton, due in theaters in late September and is currently filming the multi-story romance New York, I Love You alongside a large all-star cast including Natalie Portman, Scarlett Johansson, Ethan Hawke, and "Gossip Girl" star Blake Lively, just to name a few.

As a child and teen, Emile guest-starred on many popular television shows, including "ER", "Early Edition", and "NYPD Blue". He made his way to the big screen in 2002's The Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys and The Emperor's Club. His performance as soul-searching drifter Christopher McCandless in the recent biopic Into the Wild garnered the young actor critical acclaim. He stars as the title character in May's much-anticipated action flick Speed Racer, a big-screen adaptation of the popular 60s anime cartoon, co-starring Matthew Fox and Christina Ricci. He has completed filming on the biopic Milk, co-starring his Into the Wild director Sean Penn, James Franco and Josh Brolin. So, who's hotter?

Shia

McHotness!

Okay, so I've been wanting to do this pairing for a long time, and this week provides me the perfect opportunity to do so. This Thursday, April 24, ABC's mega-hit medical drama "Grey's Anatomy" returns to the small screen with its first post-strike episode. HOORAY! I think I speak for many of my fellow telephiles when I say it has been a long winter!
So, in celebration of this blessed event, this week's hotties are none other than the gorgeous-beyond-words Patrick Dempsey and Eric Dane.

Patrick Dempsey, who portrays neurosurgeon Dr. Derek "McDreamy" Sheperd on "Grey's", started his acting career in the 80's with a role in the short-lived series "Fast Times", a tv spin-off of the hit comedy Fast Times At Ridgemont High. He went on to star in several cult hit romantic comedies, most notably Can't Buy Me Love and Loverboy. His career hit a major slump until his dashing turn as one of Reese Witherspoon's suitors in the 2002 hit rom-com Sweet Home Alabama.
Dempsey also had a small role in the horror film Scream 3. He has a string of pre-Grey's guest appearances under his belt, including "Will & Grace", "The Practice", and "Once and Again". His star hit mega-watt status in 2005 with his role on "Grey's", earning him two Golden Globe nominations, a prominent place as one of People magazine's list of 50 Most Beautiful People three years running and one of 2006's Sexiest Men Alive. Dempsey again played leading man alongside Amy Adam's displaced fairy tale princess in 2007's hit Disney family film, Enchanted.
He stars in yet another rom-com, Made of Honor, co-starring Michelle Monaghan and "Journeyman's" Kevin McKidd, in theaters May 2.

Before he was cast as "Grey's" cocky plastic surgeon Dr. Mark "McSteamy" Sloan, Eric Dane had guest roles on several popular television shows, including "Charmed", "Married With Children" and "Las Vegas". Dane has held supporting roles in movies such as the slasher flick Feast, co-starring real life best friend Balthazar Getty, Open Water 2, and X-Men: The Last Stand. He is currently filming the comedy Marley & Me, based on John Grogan's best-selling memoir, co-starring Owen WIlson and Jennifer Aniston.
So, I know it's a toughie, but, who's hotter?

Patrick

or

Eric

FUN FACT
: Grey's is not the first time these hot doctors have tried their hand at medicine. Patrick auditioned for the role of Dr. Robert Chase on the Fox medical drama "House"; the role went to Jesse Spencer.
Eric starred on the short-lived ABC medical drama "Gideon's Crossing" as Dr. Wyatt Cooper.

Voting ends on Wednesday, April 30 at 2 pm PST.

Don't forget, all new episodes of "Grey's Anatomy" start this Thursday, April 24! (check local listings for airtimes)

Kiss Them, They're Irish!

This week's match-up is between Irish hotties Cillian Murphy and Jonathan Rhys Meyers.

Born in Douglas, Cork, Ireland, Cillian Murphy (pronounced KIL-ee-an) has been a regular fixture in European and American cinema for over a decade. He has appeared in a number of mainstream films including 28 Days Later, Cold Mountain, and Red Eye. He is well-known in the states for his portrayal of Dr. Jonathan Crane, aka "Scarecrow", Bruce Wayne's arch nemesis in the 2005 action flick, Batman Begins. Cillian's resume includes an extensive body of critically acclaimed "indie" films, including Sunshine, The Wind That Shakes the Barley and Breakfast On Pluto, a film that earned him a Golden Globe nomination for his performance as a transvestite caberet singer in 60's and 70's London.
Cillian continues to work steadily, and has a slew of new films in the works, including three biopics: Hippie Hippie Shake, in which he stars as counterculturist Richard Neville, co-starring Sienna Miller, to be released this year in the U.K., The Edge of Love, the story of poet Dylan Thomas, co-starring Miller, Matthew Rhys, and Keira Knightley, due for release this June in the U.K., and he is currently filming Dali & I: The Surreal Story, co-starring Al Pacino as the enigmatic painter Salvador Dali. Cillian reprises the role of Scarecrow alongside Christian Bale's Batman and the late Heath Ledger in his final performance as "The Joker" in this July's The Dark Knight.
Cillian is set to begin filming the thriller Peacock with critical darling Ellen Page in Iowa this May.

Dublin-born Jonathan Rhys Meyers has appeared in such films as Bend It Like Beckham, Match Point, Mission: Impossible 3 and August Rush.
He won a Golden Globe for his portrayal of Elvis Presley in the 2005 CBS mini-series Elvis. Currently, Jonathan stars as King Henry VIII on the Shotime drama series The Tudors, for which he earned a Golden Golden Globe nomination this year. His upcoming projects include May's The Children of Huang Shi, a dramatic biopic about journalist George Hogg's experiences in Japanese occupied China in 1937, Shelter, a horror flick co-starring Julianne Moore, Mandrake, based on the popular comic, co-starring magician Criss Angel, and the biopic Toussaint, co-starring Don Cheadle and Angela Bassett.
You can catch Jonathan on an all new episode of The Tudors this Sunday, April 20, on Shotime. (check local listings for airtimes.) So, who's hotter?

They Could Be Brothers: Scrubs at the Office!

This week, we take a look at two very funny men who happen to have hit comedies on NBC, and who happen to resemble each other: Zach Braff and John Krasinski.

Braff, a Jewish New Jersey native, is well-known for his portrayal of Dr. John "J.D." Dorian on NBC's medical comedy "Scrubs" over nearly seven seasons. He shot into the national consciousness, however, with his 2004 feature film directorial debut Garden State which he also wrote, produced, and starred in alongside Natalie Portman. Zach voiced the title character in Disney's animated feature Chicken Little, and his most recent film role was Tom Reilly in The Ex, co-starring Amanda Peet and Jason Bateman. Zach was set to direct, produce, and star in his own adaptation of director Susanne Beir's Danish film Open Hearts, but has since put the project on hold. He is currently directing/producing a made-for-tv film, Night Life, starring Ashley Williams, written by his older brother Adam Braff. He is also adapting and producing Adam's fiction story, Andrew Henry's Meadow. "Scrubs" has been rumored to be moving to ABC for its final season.

Massachusets-raised John Krasinski shot to stardom playing the lovable Jim Halpert on NBC's hit adaptation of the BBC white-collar workplace comedy "The Office", now in its third season. He has had small roles in films like The Holiday, Jarhead, and Dreamgirls, and stars in the period rom-com Leatherheads, currently #3 at the U.S. box office, co-starring George Clooney and Renée Zellweger. He voiced cocky jock Lancelot in last year's blockbuster animated comedy Shrek the Third.
Like Braff, John wrote, directed, and stars in the indie film Brief Interviews with Hideous Men co-starring Christopher Meloni and Timothy Hutton, due to be released some time this year. He is set to begin shooting Sam Mendes'as-yet-untitled comedy alongside Maya Rudolph and Toni Collette this month. "The Office" and "Scrubs return with all new episodes this Thursday, April 10.
So, who's hotter?

Zach

A TIE! Oh, sure, make it hard for me why don't you?! Alright, I guess I'm the tie breaker. My vote goes to John-he is much cuter, boy-next-doorish than Zach, whom I not-so-affectionately refer to as "Zach Barf". So with one vote for Zach and two votes for John, John is the winner. Sorry, Leslie. Can't leave it a tie. Better luck next time, I suppose. Thanks for voting ladies. This week's new post should be up later tonight, so remember to vote on it.

They Could be Brothers: Can You Trace This Case?

Have you ever looked at similar-looking actors/actresses and thought, "They could be siblings!" I know have. That's why I thought I'd start a series on this blog called "They Could Be Brothers."
I've always thought "Without A Trace" star Enrique Murciano and "Cold Case" star Danny Pino looked like brothers.

Enrique has played FBI agent Danny Taylor on the hit CBS crime drama "Without a Trace" for 6 seasons. Enrique starred in the Spanish adventure drama Máncora, released in Spain sometime this year. He has had minor roles in the blockblusters Traffic, Speed 2, Black Hawk Down and Miss Congeniality 2, and guest starred on the sci-fi series "Enterprise", the most recent incarnation of the "Star Trek" franchise.

Danny has played Detective Scotty Valens on another of CBS' hit crime dramas, "Cold Case", for five seasons. He has one film in the can, Across the Hall, a thrillier co-starring Brittany Murphy, and is currently filming the drama The Burning Plain, co-starring Charlize Theron and Kim Basinger; both projects are slated for release in 2009. He also appeared in 2006's Flicka and guest starred on the hit FX series "The "Shield" in 2003. So, who's hotter?

Enrique

Danny

FUN FACT:
Enrique and Danny co-starred in the 2005 historical drama The Lost City.

Be sure to watch an all new episode of "Cold Case" Sunday, April 6.

Hotties For Rent?

With the writer's strike over, I am anxiously awaiting the return of all my awesome shows. I was thinking about who to put in competition this week, and a name popped into my head: Jesse L. Martin. I love him as Detective Ed Green on NBC's perennial crime drama Law & Order, and he is equally loveable as Tom Collins in the late Johnathan Larson's Tony Award-winning musical RENT, both onstage and on the big screen. So, with that established, I immediately chose his 'RENT' co-star Taye Diggs as his competitor.
In addition to his roles on 'Law & Order', which, he is sadly leaving after 12 seasons, and 'RENT', currently in its final days on Broadway, Jesse has 4 films in the works: 'Buffalo Bushido', 'Peter and Vandy' co-starring Jason Ritter and 'RENT' co-star Tracie Thoms, the musical drama 'Silent Rhythm'with Debbie Allen, and the biopic 'Sexual Healing', in which he will portray late R&B legend Marvin Gaye, co-starring James Gandolfini.

Taye Diggs is well-known for his role as the uptight, yuppiefied landlord Benjamin "Benny" Coffin III, a role he originated on Broadway. He had a minor role in the 2002 big screen adaptation of the musical 'Chicago', and he has appeared in it on Broadway. He has completed filming on the drama 'Days of Wrath', co-starring Ricardo Chavira, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Laurence Fishburne, and Wilmer Valderrama, and is rumored to be in the cast of the upcoming 'The Trial of the Chicago 7'.Taye has logged many hours on the small screen as well, with lead roles in the acclaimed UPN series Kevin Hill and the short-lived ABC serial thriller Day Break. He is currently starring as Dr. Sam Bennett in the Grey's Anatomy spin-off Private Practice, which is slated to return to ABC in the fall. He has guest starred on shows such as Ally McBeal, Will & Grace, and The West Wing. So, which tall, dark and handsome thespian is hotter?

Jesse

or

Taye

FUN FACT: The "L" in Jesse L. Martin's name stands for Lamont; Jesse's family calls him by that name.
Taye's actual name is Scott. In his younger years, his friends used the nickname "Scottaye", which he later shortened to "Taye".

These Hunks Heat Up the Dance Floor

My apologies for the late post-it was a slow media week for me, and I couldn't find a decent topic until late Monday, and I was busy yesterday. As I said, I was at a loss for hotties to put in competition, until I watched Dancing With the Stars Monday night. There I beheld two of the hottest men I've ever laid eyes on shaking what their Mamas gave them-Chilean actor Cristián de la Fuente and R&B superstar Mario. All I can say is DRRRRRRRRRRROOOOOOOOOOOOOOL! Watch them shake it again Monday, March 24 on ABC network, and you will see what I am talking about. Cristián and Mario are competing against ten other celebrities: comedic magician Penn Jillette, comedian and radio show host Adam Corolla, equally drool-worthy NFL star Jason Taylor, 80's movie titan Steve Guttenberg, Academy Award-winning deaf actress Marlee Matlin, actress and ex-wife of "The King"Priscilla Presley, actress and poker champion Shannon Elizabeth, tennis champion Monica Seles, Tony Award-winning actress/singer Marissa Jaret Winokurand gold medalist figure skater Kristi Yamaguchi. Sibling Rivalry

This week I'm putting two of hollywood's most well-known brothers, Ben Affleck and Casey Affleck in competition. Ben's most current film role was Jack Dupree in the action flick "Smokin' Aces". The Oscar winner has one film in the can, the romantic comedy "He's Just Not That Into You", costarring Jennifer Aniston, and is currently filming the crime drama "State of Play" alongside Rachel McAdams, Russell Crowe, and Helen Mirren.
Ben made his directorial debut in 2007 with the crime thriller "Gone Baby, Gone", starring younger brother Casey. Casey had a breakthrough year in 2007, with his role in "Gone Baby, Gone" and his portrayal of notorious Jesse James disciple-turned-traitor Robert Ford in the arthouse film "The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford" , costarring buddy Brad Pitt as the outlaw James, for which Casey earned high praise, including Golden Globe, Oscar and Screen Actors Guild (SAG) award nominations. He and wife Summer Phoenix, sister to the late River and Joaquin, welcomed their second son on January 12. So, who's hotter?

I must say I disagree with my voters. I've never thought Ben was that hot. Attractive, maybe, but not hot. Casey's big blue eyes and his soft features are VERY hot. He's a better actor than big brother Ben, in my not-so-humble opinion. The one thing I dislike about the younger Affleck is his voice-it sounds nearly identical to Ben's, and I can't stand Ben's voice most of the time. I grates on my nerves.

Get Lost In These Lookers

In this week's post, we pay tribute to two of primetime TV's hunkiest men, Matthew Fox and Josh Holloway, actors behind the straight-laced Dr. Jack Shepard and bad boy James "Sawyer" Ford in ABC's hit drama series, "Lost". "Lost" has quickly become one of my favorite shows. I only started really following it at the end of season 2, so I can't say much about the first two seasons, but I can rave about the flat-out CRAZINESS and mondo suspense of season 3, and the tricky, trippy plot lines so far in season 4, which is shaping up to be the best season so far. If you'd like to catch up on the series, the first three seasons are available on DVD, and you can watch current episodes for free by clicking on the "Lost" link above, though the site's player doesn't seem mac-compatible, or you can download episodes from itunes. A little something to whet your appetite:

(This a "remix" of a season 1 or season 2 ( I can't remember that far back :p) UK promo piece-the dark-haired hottie dancing with the blonde in the black dress, the blonde in the yellow dress, the black guy, the black boy, and the blonde bearded guy dancing solo are no longer show "regulars"...very sad, indeed. But, it has plenty of Jack and Sawyer looking sexy set to killer techno, so it works for me! )

I must concur with the results. Matthew is definitely hotter than Josh. Josh has nice, chiseled features and the whole bad boy swagger going on, but Matt is the strong, silent type. He has a dark, penetrating gaze and the sexiest cheek bones I've ever seen!
Sorry, Leslie. Better luck next time! :)

Battle of the Baddies

My apologies for posting this week's blog so late-google was being stupid on me for a couple days.
This week I am paying tribute to two of the year's most talked-about film performances: Daniel Day-Lewis as a dark oil tycoon in "There Will Be Blood" and Javier Bardem as a cold, sadistic hitman in "No Country For Old Men". Both men have recieved numerous critics and guild awards for their chilling portrayals, and are both favored to win Oscars this Sunday. So, who do you think is the hotter bad boy?

Daniel Day-Lewis

or

Javier Bardem

Daniel in "There Will Be Blood"

Javier in "No Country For Old Men"

Look, drool, debate and VOTE!

Voting ends Thursday, February 28 at 11 am PST/1 pm EST

Be sure to watch the 80th Academy Awards, airing in the U.S. this Sunday, February 24, on the ABC network. Coverage begins at 5pm PST.

I will have a new post up on Monday. Be sure to vote on that as well!

UPDATE:

The votes are in!

Final Tally (on looks alone)
Daniel Day-Lewis: 0
Javier Bardem: 3

You all agreed that Daniel is the better actor, but Javier is hotter. I agree that Daniel is the better actor, but I think Daniel is hotter than Javier-something about the way he carries himself is sexy to me.
